The market town of Hawes is situated at the head of Wensleydale at around 700ft above sea-level. As well as the town itself, which is extremely picturesque, with its attractive church and Gayle Beck, the River Ure and surrounding scenery is within easy walking distance for sketching and outdoor work. Hawes is on The Pennine Way. The Courtyard Gallery & Studio is where Peter paints and sells his work from.

Five annual workshops are held at this venue, to take advantage of the changing seasons. Trees will only just be coming into bud on the two Spring Workshops (April & May), whilst the Summer event (June) will be bursting with green foliage. The September Workshop will of course have a different, Autumnal feel altogether, and who knows what the weather can throw at us for the Winter Workshop in November? The best subjects (barns, dry-stone walls, the river) are within a short walking distance of the studio (10 - 15 minutes), and generally involve the crossing of some narrow stiles and uneven ground. It is not recommended for people with serious walking difficulties.
