Day Two Day 2 on the Saga Ruby - the food is excellent and the atmosphere very friendly. Last night I attended pre-dinner drinks presided over by the Cruise Director, Tanya Whitehurst, where all the guest lecturers and entertainment folks could meet one another. The Dining Rom is massive, my place-setting pre-arranged and handed to me on a card with room number and table number. At 9:30, I joined in a quiz-night with 'John' (6 in a group - our group, half of which consisted of people from my dining room table, came second). After this, entertainment in the ballroom commenced with more introductions and promises of acts to come. A daily news-sheet - 'Ruby News' - informs the passengers of what is going on throughout the day and when, including other important announcements - last night we were asked to advance our watches and clocks by one hour. Since I'd been up since 6am and travelled over 300 miles to get to Southampton, I expired at just gone midnight - just couldn't hack it any longer - though many passengers were just getting their second wind and helping themselves to midnight snacks and booze and schmoozing away to Lars Christian Lundholm in the South Cape Bar. The sea has been incredibly choppy all night - didn't think I'd get to sleep - up and down, up and down, the engine constantly chugging away somewhere beneath me, and a mysterious banging coming from the wardrobe (turns out it was the door to the safe-deposit box there, which I've since figured out how to operate). No sea-sicknesss yet, but there are a few pale-looking faces of people staggering down the corridors, bemused by the constant movement. Several veterans of this cruis have remarked how unusual it is for the sea to be so rough so early on in the voyage - usually you get a few days mild sailing to break you in - apparently - I've been told a few times (usually in hushed tones) to expect rough weather in the Bay of Biscay!! Anyway - I've had breakfast, have checked out the computer room (cos I lost my mobile-phone signal as soon as we'd left sight of land) and am re-writing this on the computer room machine after having drafted it on my laptop, but cannot cut and paste it via my usb gizmo cos it won't let me - photos are going to have to wait until I can get a signal myself! My first watercolour workshop is at 1:45pm today. 0 Comment(s). |
