Watercolour Workshops for BEGINNERS in HAWES
Peter will be running the following Watercolour Workshops suitable for all abilities, from Absolute Beginners upwards, to be held at The Courtyard Gallery & Studio, in Hawes on occasional Friday Evenings from 4.30pm until 7pm.

Each group will be limited to 7 participants, ensuring the highest quality tuition available, on an almost one-to-one basic, in the relaxed, friendly environment of a professional artist’s studio.

Each module (of which there are currently 10) will consist of step-by-step demonstrations and exercises designed to teach the basic techniques required to paint successful watercolours. Participants of all previous experience (from ‘none’ upwards) will be made most welcome.

The cost per person is £25 per session / £120 for any 6 sessions / £175 for all 10 sessions.
Fee includes tuition only
(Some materials may be loaned free of charge - Art Materials are available for purchase in the studio)

Additionally:
one-to-one or group sessions (up to 7) may be booked under the same terms and conditions, on dates not listed here, and providing they don't conflict with events listed in the Diary. Subjects can be of your own choosing, and totally open-ended should you wish (you may wish to book a one-to-one session to help you work through a particular project, for instance). Module Subject Dates
Module 1 Introduction to the Basic Washes
Students will be shown how to paint each of the four basic washes; Plain Wash, Graded Wash, Wet-in-wet wash & Transparent Wash, and how to combine them all into a simple landscape. Materials & paper preparation will also be discussed.

Module 2 Understanding Tone and Simple Composition
Tonal awareness and the concept of good composition are the secrets of what makes or breaks a painting. In this module, students will begin with a monochrome ‘Tonal Study’ and finish with a simple, but well-constructed landscape of a local scene.

Module 3 Trees in the landscape
Trees are an important element in painting landscapes. In this module, both winter and summer trees will be covered, in all their various forms.

Module 4 Skies
Students will be shown how to paint a variety of skies using several different techniques.

Module 5 Buildings and Perspective
The rudiments of linear perspective will be covered in detail and applied to the drawing and painting of buildings. Textures and different types of construction will also be featured, including brickwork and dry-stone walls.

Module 6 Water & Reflections
This session will deal with what is undoubtedly one of the most difficult subjects in watercolour, beginning with a detailed study of the rules of reflection. Rivers, waterfalls and puddles feature strongly in this module.

Module 7 Snow
In this session, the tricky business of painting snow-scenes will be covered, including the creation of falling snow using salt-glazing.

Module 8 Figures and Faces
Learn how to successfully introduce simple figures to your landscapes - Portraiture will also be covered.

Module 9 Sketching and Drawing
Learn basic drawing techniques and methods for gathering your source material in the form of simple sketches. Watercolour Pencil techniques and water-brushes will also be covered.

Module 10 Line and Wash
Learn how to combine the techniques of watercolour and ink drawing to create loose, vibrant landscapes through this much overlooked medium.
