The trick is to suggest stone with as few brushstrokes as possible. Don&#8217;t try and and paint every stone &#8211; aim to create an impression of the subject.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">How prominent do you want the wall to be? If it is in the background, then a little dry-brush will usually be sufficient. If you try and paint in all the details, it will look cluttered and may draw too much attention to it. If the wall is in the foreground, look again at how it&#8217;s been constructed. If it is a dry-stone wall, then you should concentrate on the dark gaps between the stones. If it is mortared, then you should paint the stones themselves, and leave the mortar as highlight (don&#8217;t be tempted to use masking-fluid, though; it&#8217;ll undoubtably look too clean and clinical &#8211; rough at the edges is much better!)<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Many students&#8217; paintings I see featuring stone walls suffer from simply having too much in them!
