THE PANAMA CANAL
Today, we passed through the Panama Canal.
This was us entering the canal, from the Pacific Ocean…

This is inside the loch…

And this was us in the final loch, waiting for the boat in front to vacate so that we can make the last descent to sea-level (it was an incredibly tight fit). The large orange ship in the other loch won…

It’s been a long, hot, but very entertaining day. We’ve had a professional narrator on board, talking us through the transit, and the weather conditions have been absolutely perfect.
The Panama Canal is an amazing engineering achievement. This is the second time we’ve been through it, and I have to say that it has been as awesome this time around as the first.
I’ve also had internet most of the day, which has allowed me to catch up on some work between enjoying the ride. This is a quick post, because we’re now leaving the canal, and I don’t know how long the signal will last.
Next stop, Columbia…

Hi Peter
Have thoroughly enjoyed your blog, we were going to be on the same cruise, but circumstances unfortunately prevented this, so we are enjoying the experience through your blog. We were on the cruise to the Amazon with you I was in your art class and on the coach with Mr grumpy, you probably won’t remember me I sent you a photo of yourself.
Feel quite envious of the wildlife that you have seen, although it must be a bit monotonous seeing yet more dolphins every morning!!!
Interesting reading about the Dutch/German, Steve had a run in with a similar person on the Amazon trip, wondering if he was the same person.
Some parts of the cruise seem really enjoyable, but others probably not so, although it is all part of the cruising experience.
We are going on a river cruise in may and a cruise on Magellan in September. Still persevering with my art. Looking to reading the next instalment, the Panama canal journey looks amazing.
Best wishes to you and Tracey XXXX

Hi Lyn and Steve
Thanks for the comments… very sorry you couldn’t make it this time around, but will hopefully bump into you on another trip sometime.
Cheers
Peter
ps. The man involved in the tender boat incident was actually South African – for some reason, at the time I wrote the post, I believed he was Dutch or German (never was good with accents)… I’ve updated the Falklands post accordingly
