Klaipeda, Lithuania

We’ve been to Klaipeda before. In fact, we both thought we’d been here a couple of times, but checking back confirms that we’ve only been here the once, which just goes to show how important keeping this journal is.

The city is notable for its many sculptures and urban art, starting with ‘Black Ghost’, which is the one we always remember because it reminds us of ‘Death’ from the Terry Pratchett Discworld books. The sinister-looking black figure climbing out of the canal, up onto the quayside is really quite awesome…

We browsed to look at a craft market in Theatre Square before proceeding with or exploration of the old town, where most of the sculptures can be found. These include a dragon on the side of a building down one narrow street, a little Magic Mouse, Gentleman Cat, and a large Chess Set.

We took time out from the sculpture-searching to take look at the Bastion, a large, star-shaped area that would, at one time, have been a large fort. When the sculpture-hunt resumed, we found The Investigator hiding on a corner – a piece we particularly liked…

Finally, we hunted down something called Switchman, and by the railway station, a statue called Farewell…

Our visit concluded with a walk around the large sculpture park before returning to the ship (an stopping off to purchase a little something from craft market on the way back).
