Life’s A Beach – Bridgetown, Barbados

Today, we arrived in Bridgetown, Barbados.

With no tour escorting duties to fulfill (because we’d specifically asked not to be given them here), we had the whole day to ourselves. Not that our aspirations were in any way grand. Far from it…

In the morning, after a leisurely breakfast, we headed ashore to make use of the free wi-fi in the terminal building. This seemed problematic at first; we knew there was wi-fi available throughout the whole of the cruise terminal building, but both of us struggled to connect. Finally, in desperation, I went to the information desk and was told by the lady there that the wi-fi doesn’t work inside the building, and pointed to a place outside, where there were benches and tables, and where she assured me that it would work. Curiously enough, despite this little piece of information, there were still large numbers of people inside the building, looking at their tablets and phones, apparently doing stuff… or maybe they weren’t, and were all eagerly waiting for something to happen.

Needless to say, as soon as we had relocated outside, the wi-fi worked a dream… I managed to upload about four blog posts… and this is why blog posts are like buses; nothing for ages, and then several all at once…

We did online stuff for almost two hours before heading back to the ship for lunch. After lunch, Christine, the Creative Writing tutor joined us as we walked into Bridgetown, and to the beach, where we spent the afternoon swimming, reading and dodging the the rain. I was in the sea when a particularly large and forbidding raincloud came along and deposited its rain upon us. It seemed odd for people to be dashing out of the sea, back to their recliners, and the cover of the sunshelters when there were clearly so wet already. I have to say, it was rather an odd feeling to be in the sea, which was warm, and for the rain to be hammering down upon me. The sea was definitely the warmest, and most comfortable place to be at that time.

Although the all-aboard time was 10:30pm, we wrapped it up at around 5pm and started making back towards the cruise terminal. We’d had a good long chill-out, and the beach bar was gearing up for its evening, party trade. Since none of the three of us are particularly party animals, it seemed a good time to depart.

Both Tracey and I are extremely tired tonight and are heading for an early night. We have to be up early in the morning for tomorrow’s escorting duties…
