Being primarily a fishing port, it has lots of fish, but not a lot in the way of chips.

As we were down for tour escort duty in the afternoon, we spent a relaxing morning pottering around the town, photographing the interesting buildings and looking in what we like to call the ‘tat’ shops before heading back for an early lunch.

Our afternoon excursion was entitled ‘Molli and the Minster’. After a short coach ride, our first stop was a visit to the minster of the title, which was actually quite impressive; tall, and built of brick.

I have to say that it was more impressive inside than out.

From here, another short coach journey brought us to the highlight of the afternoon; a train ride on one of the world’s oldest narrow gauge railways. This year, steam train Molli is celebrating 130 years of existence, and a fine little steam train she is too.

Three coaches were reserved for Magellan passengers, but that didn’t stop other members of the public hopping on as we pulled into a couple of stations along the way, and filling up every available space inside. Fortunately for Tracey and myself, we spent the journey stood on the outside space between the carriages. It was blooming cold, but at least we got to enjoy the best views and the smell of the steam; more importantly, though, we weren’t couped up inside.

Looking on the map, we must only have travelled about 6 miles, but what a fun 6 miles it was! In the first part of the journey, the train travelled along rails that ran right down the centre of the streets of Bad Doberan, with folks stood alongside, waving… all quite charming. Pretty soon, though, we were out in open countryside (which looked very British to me), with extensive views in all directions. We chugged along at a fair old pace, and everyone agreed that it was one of the better, slightly unusual excursions of the cruise.
