I’ll confess; It wasn’t the island that I’d been envisaging; having been this way before, I was pretty sure I knew them well, but now I think that the island I’ve had in my mind’s eye is Gran Canaria – which is not on the itinerary this time around.

When we did arrive, though, I did remember it. La Palma is one of the smallest of the Canary islands, but it has stunning scenery nontheless. It being volcanic (as they all are), precipitous peaks rise to great heights very quickly, and Santa Cruz De La Palma is overshadowed by some stunningly beautiful mountains.

We weren’t alone in the port; in front of us was berthed a massive cruise ship covered in German wording (Ui cruise line?….), and behind us was none other than Fred Olsen’s Balmoral. We reckon both ships are probably on their way to Madeira, along with many other vessels who will be vying for a good position off Madeira tomorrow evening for the New Year fireworks.

It was a short day in port today; all-aboard time was 2pm, so we opted for a gentle stroll through the town as far as the Naval Museum (which looks like a small wooden galleon), returning via the sea front.

I’m currently looking for a new pair of trainers, as my others are slowly dropping to bits, but I don’t want to spend an arm and a leg on replacements. The main drag through the town is full of clothes and shoe shops, but prices were just a little higher than I’m prepared to go (being a tight Northerner as I am), so the old trainers are going to have to hang in there a bit longer.

It’s actually a beautiful old town, made all the more beautiful by the warm sun, and the high spirits of its milling visitors. We checked out the Cathedral and took lots of photos of the old buildings, and when we got to the sea front, we enjoyed the sight of massive waves exploding against the sea wall.

We stopped for a while at a small bar on the front and enjoyed the sun and a drink before heading back to the ship. It might have seemed like a long time coming, but today has been extremely pleasant, and a taste of The Canary Islands as they should be.

We sailed out of port with most passengers out on deck, enjoying the sight of a stunning island. The weather was just starting to turn a bit cooler, though, and we’re hoping everything remains calm for tomorrow, when we arrive in Funchal, Madeira.

Today we landed in La Palma.
