Having had our space duly nicked by a giant, ugly block of flats, our only option was to drop anchor and take all our own passengers ashore by tender boat (yeey…).

I’m pleased to say that, after a good night’s sleep, this morning was the first for quite a number of days where I didn’t feel greatly under par. My appetite has been slowly dwindling away, so it was with some relief that I found myself indulging in what can only be described as a hearty breakfast (unfortunately, Tracey now seem to have the cold).

Once again, we were both down for escorting duties on the ‘Discover Grenada’ tour. We arrived slightly late at the Show lounge, where escorts were being sent out with paddles and a passengers to catch a tender (my fault; I thought we were meant to be there at 9:30am, when in fact it was 9:15am). As it happened, it didn’t seem to matter much, since the whole operation, of getting folks ashore and matched up with minibuses on the quayside turned into total chaos anyway. I ended up wielding a number 7 paddle, escorting a number 12 bus, which seemed to confuse a few passengers, poor dears.

I was a little apprehensive about it being, essentially, a four and a half hour bus trip, but I needn’t have worried. As it happened, it turned out to be a thoroughly enjoyable tour.

Our bus took us along the coast, through small fishing villages, and eventually to a spice farm, where we were shown how spices are prepared and processed; nutmeg being a particular speciality of the island. From here, we were taken briefly to a nutmeg factory, the point of which escaped me slightly (and as it turned out, not all the buses included it in their itinerary), before heading into the interior of the island, to Great Elang Lake, a volcanic crater lake and visitor centre, where guests were treated to a free drink. The lake itself wasn’t a great deal to write home about; it nestled in amongst the trees, and wasn’t easy to see. I’m pretty sure not everyone saw it, as the emphasis on the stop seemed to be more about the free drink and making use of the restroom facilities, and there were no big signs saying ‘Lake this way…’.

From here, our penultimate stop was to see the Annandale Waterfall. It’s impressive enough, by Caribbean standards; we have larger, more impressive falls in North Yorkshire, but it was large enough to capture everyone’s attention, before heading back to St Georges, and our final stop… which was a fort, overlooking the town.

Cruise Ship Car Park, St Georges

By the time we got back to the cruise terminal, it had been a long four and a half hours… nearer five and a half, in fact. Grenada time runs much slower than normal time, though, and there was certainly no sense of haste on the part of our guide or driver. It did mean that many folks missed lunch, however…

Once back at the ship, we settled for sandwiches at Afternoon Tea. It was far too late to be catching another tender back to St Georges, and we were all ‘Greneda-ed out’, anyway. Both Tracey and myself felt quite drained from our tour, and needed to catch up on some sleep.

Unfortunately, while my cold seems finally to be coming to its end, Tracey’s is just getting going. The good news is; we’re in Barbados tomorrow, and we’ve specifically asked to not have any escorting duties, so that we can spend the day doing our own thing. That’ll almost certainly mean heading for the beach…

Today, we arrived in St Georges, the capital of the island of Grenada… The Spice Isle.
