The swell hasn’t been quite so great, and the wind not quite so fierce. The sun has been shining, so many people are still up on deck enjoying the sunshine while they can.

Numbers in my art classes have held steady at around 40 people (over two classes), give or take a few; today, I had them painting puddles.

Today’s big highlight was this evenings ‘Crew Show’.

I have to say that over the many years of working on cruise ships, I’ve seen a large number of crew shows. They’re always well attended, and enthusiastically received by passengers, but they do have a tendency to fall into more or less the same sort of pattern. In particular, when the crew of a ship is largely made up of Philippinos, there are usually a large number of traditional dances, and routines, punctuated by good singers singing ‘standards’. I’m not knocking it… the crew work hard, and it’s always nice that they are able to give something back, and show off their talents. I’ve generally grown a little tired of such shows, though, and might even have been tempted to perhaps giving this one a miss, thinking that I knew what to expect. However; when folks coming out of the first show were expressing such enthusiasm as to be considering going it to watch it all over again, we knew that something special was afoot…

Tonight’s show was quite different from any other crew show that I remember. For starters, it’s worth saying that the crew of the Magellan is incredibly diverse. On the Marco Polo, there’s a high population of Eastern-European. There are many Ukrainians and Russians here too, but there are also many Indians and Burmese, not to mention Greek.

We were treated to some great, modern (not traditional) dancing. In particular, two twin sisters gave a spell-binding performance of a routine that they’d worked out themselves, and one lone dancer performed a whole Michael Jackson routine, complete with moonwalk. All very professional, but more importantly, so very different from what we’re used to. Two guys with guitars performed a Westlife song, and we had a hilarious performance of ‘Sex Bomb’ from the crazy blokes in the Bar Department, which left everyone slightly speechless.

The penultimate act was a very funny rendition of ‘If I Was Not Upon The Sea’, performed by the girls in the Shore Excursions Department, Wagner from Photographic, and Olga, our Guest Services Manager, who had choreographed the whole thing.

This is also the first time I’ve ever seen a crew show topped by none other than the Master of the Vessel himself. The Captain sang us a Greek song before the whole of the ensemble returned to the stage for a curtain call, rapturous applause and a well-earned standing ovation.

Marvellous!!!

There’s been a definite improvement in the sea conditions today.
