We’d met the lecturer yesterday, and promised we’d listen in. He clearly knew his stuff, but there was a little too much maths in it for me. The thing that I found most interesting about him is that fact that he’d known, and worked with, the late, great Patrick Moore, and had also met Carl (Cosmos) Sagan. To be fair to him, a subject spanning the beginning and end of the universe probably deserves a little longer than 45 minutes; if he’d whittled away some of the equations and complex jargon, though, and aimed his words more at a Marco Polo audience and less of an audience of astronomical undergraduates, we might have stood more of a chance of knowing what it was that he was trying to tell us.

This afternoon, I finally got to run the Northern Lights workshop. It was with a certain amount of relief that the techniques I’d spent a lot of time trying to make accessible, and reproducable, worked well; the results were varied, with some folks having a better time of it that others, but everyone, at least, seemed to enjoy the challenge (phew!).

After the show this evening (impressionist Christopher Gee), we joined the patient few, out on deck, bedecked in warm clothes and armed with cameras and tripods in the hope of catching a view of the aurora for what might be the last time. For almost two hours we freezed and watched; people came and went, and some just stood their ground, waiting… waiting…. For a brief 10 or 15 minutes, we did see the lights again, but they were a long way off to the North, and very faint. Finally, the cold got the better of us, and we headed home to the cabin.

One of the first things someone said to us at breakfast this morning was “did you see the lights last night?” Apparently, at around 10:30pm, they came out again, in all their glory, mostly visible at the back of the ship, for about 15 minutes… grrrrrrrrr!
