We didn’t get the ful story until this afternoon, but apparently, The Quest For Adventure had turned up yesterday asking for special permission to dock there because they were running low on fresh water and needed to repllenish stocks for their next scheduled stop in Alter Do Chao. The harbourmaster had granted them permission, but only on the understanding that they leave enough space on the harbour for the Marco Polo. Did they? Did they..bugg……….

So, we ended up having to drop anchor some way out from the harbour and arrange tender transportation for people to go ashore. Boats arranged for excursions came out to the ship to pick them up and take them straight offf from there; we were on the Lake Maica Piranha Fishing tour, so we had to wait until a tender became available, in the Marco Polo Lounge.

The main problem was time. The inconvenience put back all tours by at least an hour, which meant by the time we’d returned from our trip, and eaten a quick lunch, there wasn’t time for us to take a tender to shore and have a walk in Santarem, which was a bit of a disappointment – cos we like Santarem….

The Piranha Fishing was great, though. Whichever way you look at it, its a good trip; we saw dolphins by the Meeting of the Waters, and a sloth and a couple of iguanas were spotted in the trees along the river’s edge. The fishing wasn’t unsuccessful, either; our boat bagged a total of 6 or 7 piranhas (depending who you spoke to), of all sizes and colours (black, yellow and standard silver) – neither Tracey nor I caught one, but we both enjoyed trying!

Talk about miffed! We were ahead of schedule, and arrived really early to take our place on the quayside at Santarem, the first real stop of our Amazon adventure, only to discover that we’d been beaten to it!
