The crew were doing some necessary maintenance work on the balconies down our side of the ship (starboard), which was not entirely unexpected, as we’d received a letter advising us that the work would be taking place.

It’s been a bit cooler, and I’ve been back in long trousers, although I began to wish I’d stuck with the quarter-lengths later, as the day progressed. It seemed cooler… but not so much so… the weather is continuing to amaze us!

When we visited Tromso in March this year, we walked across the bridge and took the cable car to the top of the hill, where we were treated to some amazing wintery views. On that occasion, everywhere was covered in snow, and walking to the very top of the mountain from the cable car visitor centre was tempting, but a little impractical since we didn’t have our spikes with us. We vowed to undertake the climb on our return… which was today.

Needless to say, we took the shuttle bus into town and walked to the bridge, which is currently closed to traffic due to some major resurfacing work. In Norway, this is the only time of year that such maintenance can be safely undertaken; we saw lots of similar road works from the shuttle bus.

We’ve been taking bananas from the ship for our lunches ashore. Today, however, both Tracey and I remarked on how the bananas looked well past their best (to put it politely) so, instead, we bought a couple of Snickers bars from little shop by the cathedral and headed for the cable car.

With no snow on the ground, everything looked very different from when we were here in March. That’s not to say the views were any the less spectacular… just very different. The hike to the top was exhilarating, and the views once we were up there were well worth the effort. The Snickers were particularly tasty after such an expense of energy.

After eating our ‘lunch’, we took more photographs and finally headed back to the cable car some distance below us. We could happily have stayed up there all day, but all-aboard time was 5.30pm, and we had a shuttle to catch back down in the town (but not before buying an ice cream and a cold can of drink from our favourite little shop by the cathedral).

We’ve decided we really like Tromso, with or without snow.

In the evening, we went to the Playhouse theatre to watch Heatwave, a soul band from the seventies (‘Boogie Nights’ was one of theirs). I say ‘band’; on this occasion there were only the three lead vocalists singing to backing tracks – but they were very good nevertheless… very tight, and very enjoyable!

Today we arrived in Tromso, to the sound of tap tap tapping.
