By the time we’d checked out of the site in Luxembourg the sun shone and the skies were clear. ‘Checking Out’ isn’t something that we’re used to with campsites; you just normally leave and that’s that. On this occasion, checking out was necessary because 5kw of electricity is provided as part of the basic fee. Any usage over and above that is charged at a small – about 50p per kw, I think, payable on exit. We’d used about 2kw.

Just as we were leaving there was a loud, explosive bang. A motorhome parked opposite us was raised up on what appeared to be inflatable risers (to lift the wheels up off the ground). One had literally blew up, leaving the van at an awkward tilt and with water sloshing everywhere. All very exciting and dramatic, and unlike anything I’d ever seen before – no-one was hurt, though, and I’m sure the motorhome won’t have suffered any lasting damage.

With diesel being at its cheapest in these parts, our first important job of the day was to fill up the tank. Then we were on our way towards our next destination, a journey of roughly three and a half hours which took us briefly into Germany and then into France, arriving at Strasbourg ‘City Kamp’ at about 4pm. We one break at a rest stop for lunch.

The campsite is situated within the city (hence its name), the historic centre of which is easily within walking distance. Because of this, after checking-in, we settled into our pitch quickly and headed out on a walk which took us about 45 minutes. The good news is; we were in time to visit the Notre Dame Cathedral, which closes at 5.45. I’m pleased we did because it was impressive. Fun fact: it was the world’s tallest building from 1647 to 1874 (227 years), when it was surpassed by St. Nikolai’s Church, in Hamburg.

The area around the cathedral was heaving with tourists, but we loved it. The adjacent buildings are old and interesting, alongside the regular batch of tat shops, street performers and caricature artists. It reminded us of York.

As time was getting on, we mooted the idea of eating dinner in the city., and spent some time choosing a restaurant from the countless restaurants in the district.
