The Bay of Biscay
Do you remember the film ‘Poltergeist’? When the investigators open the door to the little girl’s room, and everything is flying about? Well that pretty much sums up what it was like here last night.
All through the long, dark night, our wardrobe doors kept flying open, and objects were flying across the cabin. I say long ‘dark’ night, because while the current weather conditions continue, our cabin windows remain covered and bolted, so we’ve yet to enjoy the sea-view; one major problem with that is that we have no point of reference – sometimes, you know the floor is sloping, but you’re not entirely sure which way (odd, I know, but true).
This morning, things aren’t much better. There’s a subtle shift to the movement of the ship, though; as well as the rocking forwards and backwards, there’s now a noticeable rolling from side to side, which wasn’t quite so prevalent yesterday. To this end, the wardrobe doors have ceased to flly open and crash closed every five minutes, but it’s sometimes quite a climb from one side of the cabin to the other.
Tracey remains inert on the bed, occasionally moaning and cursing…
A further, knock-on effect of the weather is that the lifts are out of action (or have been turned off, I’m not entirely sure which). This doesn’t bother me so much, but some folks are finding the stair climb hard going.
At breakfast, it seemed, the best approach was to not carry more items than you had hands, so that you could hold on to them when the ship took a roll. The occasional crash of flying full-english punctuated an otherwise sparsely-populated Marco’s. The staff are brilliant, though, helping the less able to get to where they want to go, and bringing their breakfast to them.
Some activities have been hit, and cancelled, but I’m hoping that my classes can go ahead this afternoon, despite the movement (Peter-the-Wood has cancelled his sessions, but Clare-the-Fascinators’ session is currently in full swing… if she can do it, so can I…).
I’ve just read ‘Britain Today’, a daily printout of all that’s happening back home, and was quite shocked to see how bad the weather in the UK is at the moment, creating travel misery for folks trying to get home for Christmas… horrendous!….
