Gothenburg, Sweden
After a smooth, sailing day – our first full day at sea – yesterday, we arrived at our first port-of call today; Gothenburg, in Sweden.
It’s a port we’ve never never to before, so we were quite keen to check it out., so after breakfast we caught the shuttle bus into town.
On our way through the terminal we picked up a tourist map and planned to follow a route shown on it, which also happened to show up on Komoot app.
The bus dropped us off in Gustav Adolfs Square. From here, we followed the route to the riverside, where there was a harbour, a boat museum, and a handful of people doing aerobic exercises to music.

Leaving the riverside, after having walked its length, we climbed to the top of a small hill – originally a fort built into old town wall walls – which gave us some good views over the surrounding city. First impression was that there are lots of trams and cycle lanes (and cycles), and that it has a bit of an Amsterdam-type vibe. We liked it.
Lunch was a bratwurst hot dog from a small kiosk in a busy small square with an interesting fountain…
Gothenburg’s old town district is known as Haga, where there were some interesting old buildings. It was also clearly a bit of a tourist hotspot, with lots of souvenir shops and cafes.
The final stop on our walking route before heading back towards the ship was to see the Poseidon Statue.
The statue was fittingly impressive, and worth the walk (which seemed a little out of the way from the main centre of town), although Poseiden himself seems bit of an odd-looking character. The fountains were cool, though.
