JUST A TRIM, PLEASE
Today, we were at sea; the first of three full sea-days that will eventually bring us to our first South American port, Natal, in Brazil.
It was also a non-class day, so after breakfast, we headed up to the front of the ship to blow away the cobwebs (as we like to do of a morning), and watch the first of the flying fish.
My other plans for the morning included painting my first watercolour of the cruise (not including my class demonstrations, of course), and as I headed back inside from deck 10, to go to the cabin, I found myself myself pausing at the the Jade Wellness Centre.
Just out of curiosity, I decided to pop in and enquiry as to the cost of a hair cut. I’ve been unhappy with the haircut I got just before coming away, and even over the near two weeks that we’ve been on ship, its got thicker, and after being in the wind on deck, turns quite fluffy and annoying.
I was told that a trim would cost £21 – far more than the more modest £9 that I’m used to paying at home, but with a staff discount, this would bring it down to just over £16. At this point, the question of arranging an appointment came up, and a lady who had just arrived, who is clearly one of their top hair operatives, suggested that I could have my hair cut right there and then if I wanted.
Five minutes later, I was seated, anxiously looking at myself in the mirror, and about to be trimmed… and she was brilliant! Her hands and tools were as one, manically clipping away with the precision of an artist. I was amazed with the speed at which she cut her way across my scalp – the scissors glinted in the salon lights and hair flew in all directions… it was like watching Edward Scissorhands at work. Not only that… she worked in complete silence, concentrating on the the job at hand, constantly making minor adjustments… and not once asked me what plans I had for today (at work today luv?), or was I going on holiday this year?…
Needless to say, I walked out feeling much lighter, and much tidier, and very happy with my new haircut.
I spent the rest of the morning and part of the afternoon painting the fishing boats of Mindelo in the cabin.
This evening was a formal night, and with my new sleek haircut, Tracey found it surprisingly easy to pursuade me to go the full-formal.
Our entertainment in the Show Lounge was Davy’s second magic show, which was brilliant (again!), and tonight the clocks go back another hour (as I think they probably will do over the next two nights), meaning we will now be 2 hours behind the UK.
