SANTANDER (Day Three)

It’s been day three of our extended stay in Santander. Having walked all over the city for the last two days, we decided a change of scenery would be in order, so we booked ourselves on one of the organised tours.

Our tour was to Santilla del Mar, a medieval town situated roughly 22 miles west of Santander.

The drive out took 30-40 minutes, which featured some great views across to the distant snow-capped mountains. When we arrived at our destination, the coach dropped everyone off and a guide took us into the town on foot. The tour was billed as ‘Strenuous Activity’ but the walking was easy and well-paced. Many of the streets were cobbled, though, which could problems for some visitors.

The town – or, specifically, the ‘old town’ – was very picturesque with lots to photograph and film. I particularly enjoyed our visit to the Collegiate Church and the Cloister of St Juliana… And who doesn’t like cloisters.

We were given roughly an hour’s free time at the end, time to peruse some of the interesting touristy craft shops and purchase a small butterfly ornament for the garden.
