Sunday – Still at sea

Yesterday, I saw a whale. Well…. I say saw a whale – what I actually saw was the spout from a whale…. three times, no less. It’s not as good as someone the day before seeing a tail, but hey… I’ll take the spout over nothing….

Apparently the area around the Azores is a good place to see whales. Unfortunately, for the majority of people who spend hours up on deck with a paiir of binoculars, eager to spot one, they remain a very rare sight. The sea has been quite rocky, but nowhere near as bad as what we experienced on the Canaries cruise over Christmas. It’s also very windy out on deck, making it difficult to stand watching for whales for any great length of time.

Today, we’ll have been at sea for 5 days, since leaving Barbados. I don’t know where the time has gone. The slim chance that classes might resume took a serious dive yesterday, unfortunately, so now we’re waiting with fingers crossed for the wind to change direction, or something. Strict regulations remain in place, and whilst the resumption of classes continues to look unlikely, I’m spending my days on admin duties and online students.

Tomorrow, we are due to arrive in Horta, in the Azores, the first of our last two port stops on this cruise. On Tuesday, we are due to visit Ponta Delgada, then it’s full steam ahead for Tilbury. Rumours are that the weather is likely to be rough in the Bay of Biscay again… how bad can it be?
