Cannakale and the Ancient City of Troy

We’ve been to Cannakale before – several times, in fact. On two of those occasions, we visited the Ancient city of Troy – today makes it our third visit… and we love it!

The first thing one sees upon arrival at the site is the large mock-up of the wooden horse, by which the Greeks made their surprise attack on the Trojans.

From here, our guide led us through the remains of what is believed to be the ancient city, destroyed and rebuilt no less than seven times, on top of each other; it’s a fascinating journey through the mythological past.

The very last leg of the walk features a Roman amphitheatre before climbing back onto the bus to be taken to the Troy museum.

Along the way,, we stopped off at a small restaurant/gift shop, to make use of the restrooms. Our guide explained that this was to avoid the massive queues for the loos at the museum, although we suspect some money will have changed hands somewhere in order to facilitate the stop.

The Troy museum is a masterclass in presentation, where the history of the ancient city of Troy is illustrated with with artifacts and animated dioramas, over five fun-packed floors. We started at the top, to enjoy views of the surrounding countryside from the terrace before making our way down through the floors. Our free time began to run out as we got the ground floor, though, and it was time to return to the coach and the return journey back to Cannakale cruise port.
